Taste & Texture: Well, it’s a sweet and sour tale: the fruit comes from the tamarind tree and is cocooned inside seed pods. The fibrous pulp surrounding the seeds has sugar and high levels of tartaric acid. With our seedless tamarind you can relish its musky flavour, exotic sweet-sour taste and an unbelievably soft, date-like texture!
Versatile Usage: Tamarind has gained immense popularity in different global cuisines – no surprise! From Indian cuisine to Mexican, Malaysian and Thai cooking, its versatility has crossed all boundaries. Tangy soups, sweet chutneys, juices and carbonated drinks, tamarind is truly a versatile ingredient for adding flavours in both sweet and savoury dishes. It even preserves the flesh in several South Indian fish dishes. Needless to say, a south Indian kitchen is considered incomplete without tamarind – and so is yours!
Nourishing & Stimulating: Tamarind is a rich source of antioxidants and minerals. The anti-inflammatory properties of this prized condiment may protect against diseases such as heart disease, diabetes and cancer – in fact, it has a long history of medicinal uses. Many involve easing stomach discomfort, aiding digestion, constipation and weight management, as well as skin lightening. A yummy food that enhances your beauty? This one is a no-brainer.
Cooking Style: Some recipes call for the pulp to be removed from the pod first, others allow soaking in the cooking liquid and breaking the pod open in the liquid to release the pulp, then straining the mixture to remove the pieces of the outer-shell.
Fun Fact: In some Asian cities, natives use tamarind pulp to polish brass lamps and statues, as well as bronze and copper items. So it can be used as a tarnish remover, too!
Storage: Like any dried fruit, tamarind should be kept in an airtight, dry container in the pantry or another cool, dark spot.
